If you’re looking to become an armed security guard in Ohio, there are additional requirements you must meet:
- Applicants must be at least 21 years old.
- Background Check and Fingerprinting: Just like unarmed security guards, armed security guard applicants must pass a criminal background check and submit fingerprints electronically through an approved WebCheck location.
- In addition to the 20 hours of training required for unarmed security guards, armed security guard applicants must complete an additional 20 hours of firearms training from a licensed firearms instructor. This training includes both classroom instruction and range time, focusing on firearm safety, marksmanship, and legal aspects of armed security work.
- Applicants must pass a written examination and a shooting qualification test, demonstrating their knowledge and proficiency with the specific type of firearm they will be carrying while on duty.
- Submit your application for an armed security guard card to the ODPS, along with the required fees, a copy of your training certificates, and a passport-sized photo.
- Lastly, armed security guards in Ohio must obtain a concealed handgun license (CHL) in accordance with Ohio’s concealed carry laws. This requires additional training and a separate application process through your county sheriff’s office.
